The origin of the Christmas tree

For thousands of years, the evergreen Christmas tree has been traditionally used to celebrate the winter holidays.

It is known that Christians used it as a symbol of God's eternal life, the Romans decorated temples with fir branches, and pagans decorated their houses with fir branches during the winter solstice, thus welcoming spring.

Around 1,000 years ago, Christmas trees began to be used in Northern Europe to decorate for the New Year holiday. According to legend, the very first Christmas trees were hung upside down from the ceiling using chains.

In various parts of Northern Europe, early Christmas trees were made from cherry or hawthorn branches. These plants were placed in pots and placed in homes in the hope that they would have flowers by Christmas. People who could not afford a real tree would make pyramids of the tree themselves and then decorate them with paper of various colors and sizes, fruit, and candles.

The origin of the Christmas tree

Specially for the homeless, performances were organized on Christmas Eve, telling them mysterious stories from the Bible and using homemade, improvised white Christmas trees to enhance the effect . You've probably seen them in movies that depict the Middle Ages, reenacting the miraculous Christmas Eve.

The issue of the first documented confirmation of celebrating Christmas and New Year with Christmas trees is still a matter of dispute between the Estonian city of Tallinn and the Latvian city of Riga!

Both countries claim to have had the first trees. Estonians say that the first Christmas tree was used in Tallinn in 1441 as part of a New Year's ritual and as a main prop. Latvians, on the other hand, attribute the first use of the Christmas tree to Riga, which they say took place in 1510.

Very little is known about each of these facts, and therefore it is impossible to confirm or deny any of them. However, it is also a fact that in the town square of Riga, the capital of Latvia, there is a plaque engraved with the inscription "First New Year's tree in Riga in 1510" in eight languages.
