How does a toaster work?

What could be better than buttered toast, hot coffee, and your favorite show in the morning?

And if you don't have the time or inclination to stand in front of the oven and wait for your slice of bread to toast, a toaster is just the thing for you.

You probably know that a toaster uses electricity to make delicious toast, but did you know how this little device converts electricity into a completely different form of energy? Let's take a closer look.

However, we will note that this is a bit conditional, as there are many different types of multifunctional toasters on the market today.

Energy is an invisible, magical thing that allows us to do many necessary and interesting things. You may have heard that energy is never lost, and that's true, it just changes from one form to another.

Sometimes we humans also switch to other forms of energy, but for now let's focus on what we all believe in, and that is the generation of heat energy through electricity, which is what our beloved toaster does best.

If you've ever looked inside a toaster, you've probably seen rows of red wires. When electricity runs through these wires, they get hot and, glowing, they direct that heat toward the toast.

The movement of electricity through wires is similar to the movement of water through pipes. It moves electrons through the wires, particles that are the building blocks of atoms, and atoms are the building blocks of the metal in the wire.

After the current is passed through, the electrons begin to move rapidly and purposefully, causing the atoms in the iron to collide with each other, heating the iron in the process. The thinner the wire and the higher the current, the more atoms collide and the higher the temperature.

However, temperature is not the only energy produced by electricity. If the wire is thin enough, it glows red when heated, i.e. emits light.

The atoms inside the metal, under the influence of electrons carried within them, absorb thermal energy and become unstable, which necessitates the release of this energy in the form of light in order to stabilize.

Light is emitted in classic light bulbs using approximately the same system, although in this case the most important thing is light, not heat, so lamp manufacturers use metal wires that are as thin and durable as possible.

How does a toaster know when the toast is ready?

Now that we know how our slice of bread gets hot, let's think about how a toaster knows when the toast is ready . This isn't a difficult question, as a toaster has three ways of knowing: a timer, a thermostat, and an electronic light detector.

The first two methods are not that difficult to figure out. In the case of a timer, the toaster sets a preset time for toasting and automatically turns off the process after the time has elapsed.

In the second case, the toaster has a built-in, small thermostat that is placed between the bread and the heat source and thus regulates the excess or lack of heat emitted to the toast.

And the third method, the electronic light detector, is very interesting. As we mentioned, in the process of making toast, not only heat, but also light is released, and the light detector captures the amount of light falling on and reflected from the bread and releases electrical energy to balance it. If the bread is white, it reflects more light, if it is brown (hopefully not black), the electronic detector perceives this and the toaster automatically turns off.
