A skateboard is a type of sports equipment used for entertainment.

It is usually made of a specially designed 7-8-layer wooden board and has polyurethane wheels attached to the underside.

A skateboard is propelled by one foot while the other foot remains balanced on the board. A skateboard can also be used by standing on the board on a downhill slope and allowing gravity to carry the board and the person standing on it.

The two main types of skateboards are longboards and shortboards. The shape of the board is also important: to perform tricks, the skateboard must be concave.

The history of skateboarding

Skateboarding was first invented in California in the 1950s. The first skateboards were made with rollers attached to the board. Skateboarding gained popularity due to surfing: in fact, skateboarding was originally called surfing on asphalt. The first skateboards were handmade by individuals from wooden boxes and planks.

Companies began producing skateboards in 1959 as the sport became more popular.

What is a skateboard made of?

Board

Longboards are usually 36 to 91 cm long. Plastic boards are usually about 56 cm long. Some larger boards, up to 69 cm long, are called nickel boards.

Longboards, a common variant of skateboarding, are used for riding at higher speeds and on rougher surfaces, and are much more expensive. Old-school boards (those made in the 1970s and 1980s or modern boards that mimic their shape) are generally wider and often have only one stroke. Variants from the 1970s often have little or no camber.

Wheels

Wheels allow the skateboarder to move and help control speed while riding. Typically, there are four wheels attached to the board. Ranging in size from about 48 mm to 60 mm, smaller wheels are lighter in weight and are used for shorter distances. They are usually made of polyurethane (PU) and come in different grades of PU. Higher grade PU is more durable and provides a smoother ride, while lower grade PU is more affordable but wears out faster. Larger wheels are heavier in weight, which is better for maintaining speed and long distances. Wheels that are larger than 60 mm are usually used for longer boards.

Wheel clamps

The metal parts known as wheel clamps are what attach the skateboard wheels to the board. They consist of a suspension. The suspension and the support connect together, allowing the skateboard to spin and turn.
