A tried and tested refrigerant is Freon, a liquid that helps to expel hot air from the cold. This refrigerant and the compressor are a vital duo that work together to help each other.

A timing belt and V-belt drive the compressor, which is attached to the engine block of the vehicle. When the AC system is turned on, the belt drive starts moving with an electromagnetic clutch. The switch plate oscillates 6 double-ended pistons, which are responsible for the intake and compression of the air flow.

It is important to note that the AC compressor draws in gas from the refrigerant through the evaporator, which causes a pressure drop. The reduced pressure causes the refrigerant to evaporate at a lower temperature before the compressor takes in this cold vapor and compresses it. During compression, the refrigerant gas is heated and flows through pipes to the condenser. Here, it re-liquefies and releases heat as it cools. It then returns to its gaseous state in the evaporator before being sucked into the AC compressor.
