What is a drill and how to choose one?

A drill is used to make holes in solid materials, such as wood or stone. There are many different models of drills on the market , so consumers need to be very careful when purchasing one.

There are several factors to consider when purchasing a drill:

Size: Drill bits are available in 1/4-inch, 3/8-inch, and 1/2-inch sizes. These measurements refer to the size of the drill chuck—the part that holds the bit—and indicate the largest shank the drill bit will fit into. The 3/8-inch drill bit accepts a wide range of bits, making it versatile for common tasks around the house. The 1/2-inch drill bit handles heavier applications.
Speed: A variable speed drill with adjustable torque gives you the versatility to drill into different materials and use different bits. Drilling into soft wood, hardwood, metal, and stone requires different speeds and torque or torque force. Harder materials and larger bits require lower speeds and more torque. Higher speeds and lower torque work with softer materials and smaller bits.

The drill should be comfortable to use.

Any tool should be comfortable to use. A drill may be easy and comfortable to use when you first pick it up, but consider what it will be like after a few hours of use. Think about the job you need to do and balance the power you want against the size and weight you are comfortable handling.

The design of the drill also affects its feel. There are two types of drill handles. The T-type drill handle is located in the middle of the drill body. This design distributes the weight for better balance and less wrist strain.
