Screwdriver parts and dimensions

Different types of screwdrivers are usually defined by the shape of the drive tip, which corresponds to the specific type of screw head. However, other types of screwdrivers are specialized or intended for specific industries.

Screwdriver dimensions

Screwdrivers come in a variety of sizes. As well as the standard large, medium and small, there are also thick screwdrivers , which are ideal for use in tight or confined spaces. Their length is usually measured in millimetres (mm).

It is important to note that some brands may offer different size options than others. For example, there are four standard Phillips screwdriver sizes. These range from #0 to #4, with #0 being the smallest screwdriver.

Some tools can also be classified by Torx size. This is indicated by the letter T followed by a number - for example, a T10 screwdriver. It ranges from miniature screws to T45 and beyond. This system can also be applied to screws, helping you choose the right tool for a specific size screw.

Screwdriver parts

The three main parts that make up a screwdriver are as follows:

Handle
Shaft or shaft
Disk tip or bit

All three parts are made during the manufacturing process using special machines to form the correct shape of the material using an extruder and it is heat treated to achieve the desired tension.

Screwdriver handle

Screwdriver handles are used for gripping and are usually round to prevent slipping on flat surfaces. They can also be ergonomically designed to improve comfort when gripping.

The materials used in the manufacturing process have changed over time and there are now a wider variety of tools designed for use in specific applications.

Most often, handles are ergonomic and made of hard plastics such as cellulose acetate and rubber. They can also be covered with a non-slip, soft material such as thermoplastic rubber to improve grip.

Beard

The screwdriver tip may be an integrated part of the base if it is not removable.

Alternatively, it can be an interchangeable part known as a driver - similar to drill bits. They are designed to be used with multi-bit tools. The tip may also be known as a screw head.
