A jumper cable is a pair of insulated wires of sufficient strength with terminals at each end to connect a stopped vehicle to an auxiliary source, such as another vehicle with the same system voltage or another battery. Its terminals may be covered with insulation to prevent accidental shorting. The terminals may be made of copper or steel and are usually marked with black (−) and red (+) to indicate polarity.

Terminal block extension limitations

Operating a lead-acid battery can overload the terminals and produce flammable hydrogen gas through the electrolysis of water inside the battery.

The recommended connection sequence is intended to reduce the chance of accidentally shorting a good battery or igniting hydrogen.

Terminal blocks should not be used to connect between systems of different voltages; for example, connecting 6V and 12V systems together may cause damage.

If a dead battery is physically damaged, has low electrolyte levels, is damaged, or is frozen, charging will not fix the battery. A vehicle with a frozen battery should not be started, as the battery may explode.
