The versatility of a band saw

A band saw can be used to make curved cuts, even on thick wood, for example, to create cabriole legs, to make short cuts in lumber and cross-cuts. However, the most common use of a band saw is to cut irregular shapes.

The second most common use is for resawing or cutting timber into thinner sheets. A band saw also makes the smoothest cuts and, with the appropriate blade, can be used to cut materials other than wood, including metal.

The size of a band saw determines the size of the stock it can handle, and the size is based on two dimensions:

The first is the distance between the inside edge of the blade and the throat of the saw. A band saw has a measurement between the two. This measurement can range from 10 to 24.

The second dimension is the depth of cut - the distance between the table and the underside of the blade.

The type and size of the saw table is also important. The larger the table, the easier it is to hold. The table should also be able to be set at angles up to 45°. One use for this mode is to remove the corners of a large turning block to speed up the work when turning the saw.

The versatility of a band saw

Most band saws also come with a fence , which is used for resawing, and a miter gauge, which is used for crosscutting. Band saws are prone to vibration and, regardless of the model of bench or table, must be well secured.
