Learn about the history of the stroller
A stroller is a wheeled vehicle for transporting children, usually used from infancy to 36 months. Children are transported mainly in a seated or semi-reclined position.
The history of the stroller
Although people have been developing ways to easily transport their children for thousands of years, the first pram was invented in 1733 by William Kent for the Duke of Devonshire. As might be expected, the item created for the Duke's child was extremely luxurious and gilded with gold and silver. Due to the high cost of early prams, few lower-class people owned one, and if they did, the pram would have been made of much more modest materials , such as wood or wicker.
However, in 1889, African-American inventor William H. Richardson patented a new type of baby carriage. His idea was to have the carrying joint on the side of the carriage. Several changes were made, including a change in the wheel mounting structure, which allowed his carriage to turn at will, meaning that the carriage could turn 360 degrees.
Because of this new design and affordability, carriages became more widely used by the middle class.
