Hyundai is a Korean brand founded by Chung Ju-Yung. After the Asian financial crisis, the company transferred most of its business to special units, including Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Department Store Group, and Hyundai Heavy Industries Group. The name "Hyundai" is derived from the Korean word for "modern".

History
The first company was founded in 1947 as an auto repair shop. Later, it became an engineering and construction company. Chung Ju-Yung and his family members began to engage in other activities and expand their influence into other industries. As a result, the largest company in Korea emerged.
With the help of US military contracts and government infrastructure development programs, Chung Ju-Yung's company became a major construction firm in the Republic of Korea. In particular, it was fulfilling a very lucrative contract that provided for the construction of a huge 400-kilometer highway between Seoul and Busan.
Since 1965, Hyundai began to enter the construction markets of Guam, Thailand and Vietnam. In 1967, Hyundai Motor Company was founded, in 1973 - Hyundai Heavy Industries. In 1974, the construction of the first ship was completed. In 1983, Hyundai entered the electronics market, forming Hyundai Electronics.
By the mid-1990s, Hyundai had over 60 subsidiaries and was active in various sectors of the economy, including the automotive, construction, chemical, electronics, financial services, and shipbuilding industries. During the same period, it had annual revenues of approximately US$90 billion and employed over 200,000 people.
